Institute of Technology – Project Background

ACA developed the design for the new Institute of Technology.  In addition, we provide an integrated service including architecture, interior, landscape design and principal designer services which adds a holistic perspective.

The new-build single-storey extension is currently under construction within the grounds of East Riding College in Beverley.  Furthermore, the Institute Of Technology (IOT) department will specialise in delivering higher technical education with a focus on technology, mathematics, science, and engineering subjects.

The Brief

Firstly, the challenge for ACA was to develop a design that seamlessly integrated with the existing building.  Secondly, the building infrastructure needed to allow for future-proofing through a phased, vertical extension, minimising disruption to college operations.  Thirdly, openings needed to maximise natural light and capture surrounding views to provide an open feeling.

So, the proposed design layout flexibility is simple, intuitive and accessible for all, inspiring forward-thinking teaching concepts.  In addition, the proposed extension forms a learning courtyard between the existing and new facility. Furthermore, the resulting courtyard will become an enjoyable outdoor space for staff and students.

The proposed extension comprises:

  • CAD Suites
  • Classrooms
  • A Science Lab
  • A Higher Education Study Zone
  • A Workshop

Interior Design

Interior design plays an important role in many aspects of student learning.  Therefore ACA selected acoustic flooring and ceilings to reduce noise levels in support of the educational activities. As students work in a small group at times or gather as a whole for lessons, the ACA team designed a flexible study zone to adapt accordingly.  Moreover, we selected classroom furnishings to promote student learning and interaction with their peers and teachers.

Colour Scheme

As well as defining layout functionality, ACA selected a colour scheme to positively influence students’ behaviour, motivation levels and emotional wellbeing.

Sustainability

ACA specified the extension building elements with reference to the “BRE Green Guide to Specifications” and to comply with Approved Document Part L. This ensures a rating of sustainable ‘cradle to grave’ construction including insulation with a low embodied environmental impact to reduce energy usage.  In addition, we maximised natural light through the use of different window heights in classrooms. Furthermore, all spaces benefit from openable windows to ensure natural ventilation, important for fresh air, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic.

Future Proof

ACA has applied future-proofing principles for the design development to ensure the new extension meets the structural requirements for vertical expansion. As the college grows in popularity, two additional floors can be added.

Construction work started on site in December 2020.

ACA is a local business that packs a big punch with a personal, family service on every job. The team are not afraid to think outside the box and put forward ideas, while looking to save you money. I appreciate the thoroughness of the ACA Design Team and their proactivity in collaborating with the wider design and construction team. In addition, they can provide an integrated service including architecture, interior, landscape design and principal designer services which adds a holistic perspective.``
