Maister Lodge Refurbishment & Extension –
Following ACA’s successful design of a dementia inpatient unit refurbishment, we have designed additional quality spaces. In fact, Maister Lodge is an inpatient unit for older people with mental health problems in Hull or East Riding.
Maister Lodge Refurbishment & Extension – The Design
Primarily working with the existing fabric of the building, ACA re-designed the hexagonal pod’s layout to host:
- Five bedrooms with en-suites.
- A hoisted bathroom.
- A clinic, therapeutic area; sluice; laundry area; staff W.C/
- Dining and living rooms
- A nurse station.
Patient Recovery and Pandemic-proof Design
After Covid-19 hit, ACA carefully designed the new layout to make it pandemic- proof.
Therefore, we designed a timber frame extension to host an Activities of Daily Living Kitchen (ADL) and visitor’s pavilion.
Indeed, the ADL kitchen area allows patients to get involved with meal preparation and helps speed recovery.
Moreover, ACA designed welcoming, communal living spaces including an enclosed garden accessible from the living and dining areas.
ACA designed two modular buildings to host additional staff spaces.
Firstly, a singular modular building close to the refurbished patients’ area, hosts a small staff room and handover room.
Secondly, a larger double modular building near the car park hosts staff and handover rooms for higher staff numbers.
Furthermore, ACA re-designed the layout with dementia-friendly principles, applying anti-ligature measures and a pandemic safe environment.
Finally, our refurbishment design supports the Trust achieve its target to reduce carbon emissions.
We appointed ACA on this type of project for their recognised specialism and expert knowledge in design for dementia.
