ACA has designed a maternity ward refurbishment on behalf of London North West Healthcare NHS Trust.

Northwick Park Hospital is a major NHS hospital in Harrow, north west London.

Principally, the brief was to design a refurbishment of the two existing reception areas and staff rooms, to accommodate:

• A refurbished Reception area,
• Four Examination and Treatment Rooms,
• A Consulting room,
• A new and larger Staff well-being room

Working within the existing fabric of the building, ACA re-designed the layout with dementia-friendly principles.  For instance, we carefully selected colours, materials and fabric with a sufficient contrast of Light Reflectance Values (LRVs). Hence supporting the independence of everybody visiting and working in the maternity ward.

Furthermore, we introduced a sense of wellbeing in every room, with a particular focus on the staff room.  Here, we provided a relaxing environment for nurses and doctors to relax and unwind, with soft furnishings, botanical wallpaper, and nature-themed glass imagery.

Finally, the improvements in lighting and colour scheme create a pleasant, welcoming and non clinical environment.
