ACA Hosts Work Experience Student – Amelia!

Amelia’s Work Experience: A Week in the World of Architecture at ACA

At ACA, we believe in the power of education and the importance of nurturing the next generation of architects and interior designers through work experience. This led us to open our doors and welcome Amelia Parnaby for a week of immersive learning and hands-on experience.

Amelia’s journey with ACA began with a warm welcome from our team, followed by an introductory session including some of our most significant projects. Amelia was introduced to the team, giving her a comprehensive overview of how an architectural practice operates.

Understanding that architecture is a blend of art and science, we dedicated Amelia’s visit at ACA to the technical side of our work, allowing Amelia to delve into the creative aspects of architecture. She was introduced to software such as Revit, giving Amelia the opportunity to learn about the iterative process of refining development. Our team provided hands-on training, allowing Amelia to experiment with digital modelling and drafting. By the end of the week, she had created her first 3D model, a significant achievement, that showcased her quick learning and adaptability. We emphasized the importance of creativity and innovation, encouraging her to think outside the box and consider various design solutions.

Theory and digital models are essential, but seeing architecture in action brings a unique perspective. Amelia joined ACA on a site visit to one of our ongoing projects, Cottingham Parks. This experience was eye-opening as she observed the practical challenges and solutions involved in construction.

On the final day at ACA, we held a debriefing session where we asked a series of questions allowing us to understand the impact we had on Amelia’s learning experience:

Why did you choose to do your work experience with Alessandro Caruso Architecture and Interiors Limited (ACA)?

Amelia: When I came across ACA whilst searching for a place to complete my work experience at, their impressive projects and descriptions of each project drew my attention immediately to the company.

What were your first impressions of ACA?

Amelia: The small team of talented architects and interior designers instantly made me feel more comfortable going into a new place. Also, the entire team was really friendly, so it was easy to talk to them and ask for help when needed.

What activities or tasks have you participated in during your week with us?

Amelia: Over the week I experimented with an application called Revit. Using this application, I developed previous floor plans I had created before my placement, and also moved on to creating some newer ones once I’d become more confident with how to use the software.

What did you enjoy the most about your time at ACA?

Amelia: Whilst at ACA, I particularly enjoyed the freedom I was given to experiment with their software, and bringing my own ideas to life. However, with this freedom, I also received lots of valuable tips and tricks about the software and my ideas in general.

What have you learned during your work experience?

Amelia: During my work experience, I have learnt how even the smallest changes of a design, whether it be the material something is built out of, or the layout of the floor plan, it can really pull your ideas together and make the final piece appear much tidier and complete.

How did your expectations compare to the reality of working at ACA?

Amelia: My week at ACA far exceeded the expectations I originally had. I expected to be shadowing people across the 5 days, however my experience was very far from it. Not only did I get the opportunity to use Revit to create my own ideas, I even got the amazing opportunity to go on a site visit to Cottingham Parks and experience what it is like to deal with an active project from the architects position.

How would you describe the support and guidance you received from the ACA team?

Amelia: Throughout the entire week at ACA I felt welcomed by the team. Everyone was always willing to answer my questions, and provide some tips as I brought my own designs to life to make them appear more professional and complete.

What are your plans for your future career?

Amelia: Over the past few years I have contemplated becoming an architect, and this work experience placement has certainly proved that it is a career I would like to continue with. Come September, I will be looking for apprenticeships and university courses that specialise in architecture and interior design.

Are there any additional comments or thoughts you would like to share about your time at ACA?

Amelia: Thank you to the ACA team for a memorable and valuable week at the company.

At ACA, we are committed to fostering the talents of young individuals like Amelia. We look forward to continuing our tradition of supporting and mentoring aspiring architects, contributing to the future of this dynamic and impactful profession.
